Halesbury School in Halesowen

IMG_0899For the second year running Yew Tree Nursing Home have donated selection boxes to the Christmas Fayre at Halesbury School in Halesowen. “Halesbury is an all age Special School offering education services to pupils with a range of needs, including moderate learning disabilities, autistic spectrum disorders, speech/language communication and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder”. (taken from school website). The school uses their Christmas Fayre to raise money for additional activities for the pupils.

The residents spent the day wrapping the 100 selection boxes and worked very hard ready for the Christmas Fayre. A pupil from the school Jack Crowdy visited Yew Tree to collect the gifts and as you can tell by his cheeky smile he was very happy and wanted to Thank everyone for their kindness. We wish them well in their fundraising.

With Christmas fast approaching we always look at ways we can help the local community. In recent years we have undertaken food collections for  Birmingham Dogs Home and the Homeless. This year we have considered a few of the local charities who need our help and we have decided to undertake a collection on behalf of the Black Country Food Bank which covers Halesowen and the surrounding area.

“Black Country Foodbank helps vulnerable individuals and families in crisis through the provision of 3 days emergency food supplies while a longer-term solution is developed. The services we provide have an enormous impact on the people who use them, giving them an important breathing space at a time of great need”. Further information on the charity can be found here at www.blackcountryfoodbank.org.uk.

A full list of items they request is on the last page of the newsletter. A basket will be placed in reception and all donations will be collected over the coming weeks and dropped to the charity at the beginning of December.   We hope you could help us raise as much as possible for those in need at this time of year. Thank you.

July 2018 Newsletter

July 2018 Newsletter

We are buzzing after the success of our garden party and I’m happy to report I don’t have a single black eye after my time in the stocks so thank you everyone. We were very lucky on the day with lots of sunshine and laughter and the afternoon ended up with a water fight amongst staff and guests which I think everyone enjoyed although I appeared to be the only one who ended up in the pool thanks to Sarah Potts.

Before we discuss the money raised can I please thank all of my helpers on the day. John and James did a fantastic job with setting up for the  main event so thank you for your hard work. Thank you to all the helpers on the stalls, John Mills, James Lee, Ollie Lee, Sarah Potts, Teresa Morgan, Mark Harding, Vivienne and Julian Griffiths. A huge thank you must go to all the staff who were on shift during the day ensuring the home continued to run smoothly and bringing out the residents so they can enjoy the party too.

So Thank You Everyone You Are All Awesome!!!!!!!!!!

Now for the news you’ve been waiting for the amount raised, it is my pleasure to advise you that we raised a whopping £417.10 for the Donkey Sanctuary which I think is fantastic so well done everyone, I’m sure they will be very happy with the result………..

Well the sun is finally shining at last hurrah!!!. Lets hope it’s here to stay for a little while at least. Works are moving forward in the gardens to get them ready for the Summer so please look out for any areas that may be closed while works are ongoing.

We have received some sad news that Dr Phillips will be retiring in July this year. Dr Phillips has been the nominated Doctor for the home for some time now and we are sorry to see her go but would like to wish her all the best in her retirement.

In other news it’s always hard to find new and exciting ways to show our appreciation to the staff for all their hard work and for all they do for the residents. Staff currently receive benefits like paid breaks, free hot drinks, squash and lunch to name a few things but we are always looking for new ways we can reward them more. One of the new ways we have introduced is for staff to have their Birthday off as Paid leave. This came into force from the 1st April 2018 and means that everyone can spend their special day with loved ones as a thank you for all they do…………….

We thought the winter was finally over and started to make plans for the warmer weather but winter is hanging on for a bit longer unfortunately so it has halted our plans a little bit but we will persevere and hopefully the residents will be enjoying some fresh air very soon.

Palliative Care Champions

It is with my great pleasure to advise you that as well as the Gold Standards Framework accreditation the home has received the Palliative Care Champions award. The palliative care champions accreditation has been awarded by the Mary Stevens Hospice following numerous visits and audits undertaken at the home. Well Done to Carol, Katie and Jane who took part in the process.
